Super Fuel for Change

Did you know that your brain is a magical transformational tool?

Through neuroplasticity, your brain can literally rewire itself, allowing you to adopt habits, fresh ways of thinking and new approaches to problems.

Your brain is therefore not static—it is a superpower of change.

Just think of the possibilities.

Neuroplasticity gives you the ability to transform your dreams into reality and your loftiest goals into daily routine.

There are many lifestyle factors and habits that encourage neuroplasticity including sleep, nutrition, humor, play, reading fiction, dancing and even learning an instrument!

But without a doubt the most important factor when it comes to brain plasticity is what I like to call ‘personal relevance’.

To get the change you want in life, it must be highly relevant for you. If you are not deeply convinced that what you are trying to achieve is important, the motivation just won’t be there and you will eventually give up.

This is why gyms, which are full in January and February, are empty by March.

When your weight loss or fitness goals were more of a ‘should’ than a ‘this is really important to me’, it’s hardly surprising your New Year’s fitness resolutions are quickly abandoned and old habits return.

To get off the couch (or change anything!), you must have a deep, profound motivation to do so.

You need to understand your why.

It is your ‘why’ that will give you the determination and drive to reach your goals.

It is your ‘why’ that motivates.

It is interesting to look at how the brain reacts to motivation.

When you are motivated, your brain increases the production of the neurotransmitter dopamine.

Dopamine is well-known as the brain’s ‘feel-good’ chemical. It also plays a key role in boosting your mood, increasing motivation and helping you focus. The fact that dopamine regulates motivation and encourages focus means it gives you the ‘fuel’ to persevere, no matter how challenging the task.

One of the most interesting aspects of dopamine is that it isn’t just triggered when you complete a task. It is produced when you anticipate the rewards of completing a task.

This is precisely why visualizing the reward of your goals is extremely powerful. The anticipation of the future reward produces dopamine which in turn gives you the necessary motivation to translate thought into physical action.

So, what about you?

What are your personal relevant goals that you would like to achieve in 2022?
